High Beginning English Instructor/Digital Literacy Instructor
Phichet grew up in a family of 4. He is originally from Thailand and has lived in the United States for 10 years. His experiences include living in Hawaii for 5 years and graduating from University of Wisconsin-River Falls. His passion in English language and teaching leads him to pursue his education and major in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). He loves his students, and is very happy to be part of their knowledge.
Chavarria Pre-Literacy Instructor/Volunteer Coordinator
Diego is a teacher that comes from a family of educators. He has taught English in Japanese public schools for five years and is expanding his career by teaching adult students here at VSS. Having immigrated to the U.S. with no English experience and moved to Japan with minimal knowledge, he understands the importance of providing assistance to those new to a country. In his spare time, he likes to read and write stories about his experiences.
ABE/ESL Program Manager
Amy is originally from Iowa, where she graduated from Iowa State University. She began her teaching career as a volunteer ESL Instructor with the Minnesota Literacy Council. Amy also worked in the Minneapolis Public Schools with low-literacy learners through Americorps. Amy has experience teaching Pre-literacy to Advanced English.
Learner Support Specialist
Shamo was born in Burma. He lived in a Thailand refugee camp for 20 years. He moved to the United States in 2008, where he lived for three years in Austin, Texas. Shamo began taking English classes in Texas. He moved to Minnesota in 2011, where he began his relationship with VSS as a participant in the Employment Program. Shamo speaks Karen, Burmese, Poe Karen and Thai. He is married with two daughters and one son.
Employment and Health Program Manager
Nay Htoo was born in Burma in 1965. Nay Htoo graduated with bachelor of art, Geography major in Maulmain University, Myanmar. After graduating in 1988 because of pro democracy students uprising in Burma, he left from country to Thai Burma border lived there for nine years in a small village and served Karen people as village head men for four years. In 1997 Burmese army attacked and occupied their village so he and his family fled to Thailand and become refugees. They resettled to US as political refugees in September 2003 in St Paul, Minnesota. After his arrival, in 2006 Nov Nay Htoo joined the Vietnamese Social Services (VSS) as Karen Pilot program coordinator, Social Service manager at VSS. Currently, he is the Program Manager for Employment Services at VSS. He is also a chair person of Karen Community of Minnesota and lives in Maplewood with his wife, one son and two daughters.
Eh Wah Moolay
Eh Wah Moolay was born in Burma in 1983. Eh Wah Moolay was graduated high school at Cornerstone Christian Correspondence School in Georgia. Also high school graduated at Tham Hin Refugee camp. In 1997 Burmese army attacked and occupied his village so he and his family fled to Thailand and become refugee. He moved to Saint Paul Minnesota as refugee in September 2006. After his arrival, he was worked at G & K service for five years and he joined to Vietnamese Social Services of Minnesota as employment counselor in April 2012.Currently, Eh is employment outreach specialist at Vietnamese Social Services of Minnesota. He also volunteer and member of Karen Community of Minnesota and lives in Saint Paul with his wife, one sons and two daughter.
Sacha teaches the Intermediate ESL class at VSS. She graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2012 with a Bachelor's degree in International Relations. She began her journey with Adult Education in 2011 as a Curriculum Development Intern at Minnesota Literacy Council - Minneapolis. Since then, she has volunteered at multiple organizations including CLUES St. Paul, Open Door Learning and Neighborhood House. She has taught every level from Pre-literacy to Advanced. Currently, she is completing her Master’s in ESL at Hamline University and expects to finish in May 2018. In her free time, she likes to listen to podcasts, play chess and soccer, spend time with her nieces, read and travel.
