A thriving community is one that knows why it exists at all — the content of its being as a community — and is able to articulate to others this reason for its existence. It has developed ways of teaching this articulacy to the new people who join the community so that there is a transmission of and continuity in community identity and mission. Thriving cannot be accomplished alone. From cradle to grave, we rely upon countless others—people and institutions—in order to flourish. Thriving is a holistic endeavor that is impossible outside relationships of reciprocity and interdependence and outside shared contexts of opportunity. In these ways, thriving unites under one word a number of other critical concepts such as prosperity, health, sustainability, social equity, and happiness.
Give expression to long-standing and universally-recognizable ends that are essential to human thriving (e.g., intellectual life, aesthetics, sociality, play, health, security, and transcendence)
Become actualized within specific social practices and institutions (e.g., universities, theaters, social media, clubs and associations, hospitals and clinics, and places of worship)
Have distinctive histories that shape their present and future possibilities; interact dynamically with one another, creating both virtuous cycles when robust and healthy, and vicious cycles when depleted and weak)
Why We Do It
It takes strength of character to move from one form to another. We are constantly evaluating, listening, correcting, and innovating. We do not fail when we change course. We fail when we are unwilling to change when that is what’s needed.
We are not satisfied until we achieve meaningful, positive results. We do not see the challenges and ineffectiveness of the status quo as barriers to success, but as invitations to think creatively and to push forward.
Our determination comes from knowing what we are for, and not simply what we are against. Creating a roadmap for change requires the vision to see a better way, the belief that a better way is possible, and the conviction that justice demands it.
No person, community, or ecosystem exists in isolation and without interconnection. The well-being and happiness of human populations are inextricably linked with one another. None of us are truly free and content until each and every individual in the most vulnerable communities and ecosystems among us are safe and flourishing.
We are committed to honor the stories behind the statistics of social injustice and health and economic disparities. In doing so, we elevate the courage and resilience of those facing unspeakable challenges, and unleash the human capacity for empathy that has the power to change history.
The most effective solutions to brokenness and segregation are collaboration and unity. They will not be crafted in far-away offices by a powerful few, but by a diverse and collaborative community, with those most affected by the social injustice and hatred at the center.
Ignite your Entrepreneurial Spirit
We believe in the power of entrepreneurship – and an entrepreneurial spirit – to tackle global challenges, transform communities, create jobs, spur economic growth and close the opportunity gap that confronts far too many people here in the United States and around the world.
We believe that through entrepreneurship, we can create more vibrant communities, a stronger America and a more prosperous world, close the opportunity gap and scale creative solutions to persistent problems.
A sense of economic opportunity is like fire – when ignited, it spreads quickly. We intend to stoke the fire and support the visionary change makers ready to take action.
Be it an act of volunteerism, voicing an opinion at a town hall meeting, finding connections through online networks or turning contacts into national or global campaigns, citizen driven solutions are critical to challenging the status-quo and breaking down barriers to innovations that will improve the health of our communities, businesses, cities, nation and the world.
Make A Change
Citizens are ready for, and demanding, social change. They need better, smarter and more effective ways to enact that change and they need greater faith that their voice will make a difference. We want to catalyze the efforts of change makers who put citizens at the center of efforts to solve the world’s greatest social challenges.
The actions of one person have the potential to spark a movement. And we believe that it are movements created by engaged citizens that can lead to transformative change.
